چکیده

Global observations of ocean swell propagation is presented and analyzed, using on four years of satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar data. Tracking swells along their propagation paths yields an estimation of the dissipation of their energy. Swells can be very persistent with energy e-folding scales exceeding 30,000 km. For increasing swell steepness, this scale shrinks down to 2700 km, revealing a significant loss of swell energy. This pattern is consistent with a laminar to turbulent transition of the boundary layer, induced by the opposite wave-induced motions of air and water, with a threshold Reynolds number of the order of 100,000. This finding opens the way for more accurate wave forecasting models, and provides a constraint on swellinduced air-sea fluxes of momentum and energy.

Observation of swell dissipation across oceans

Global observations of ocean swell, from satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar data, are used to estimate the dissipation of swell energy for a number of storms. Swells can be very persistent with energy e-folding scales exceeding 20,000 km. For increasing swell steepness this scale shrinks systematically, down to 2800 km for the steepest observed swells, revealing a significant loss of swell ener...

Persistency of ocean swell fields observed from space Fabrice

Using global satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations, swell systems are confirmed to travel over very large distances across ocean basins. Satellite observations can provide a global view of swell systems when using a specific ”wave mode” sampling. The data are gathered globally and systematically, but the SAR-derived peak wavelength and directional parameters are restricted to th...

Persistency of ocean swell fields observed from space

Using global satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations, swell systems are confirmed to travel over very large distances across ocean basins. To yield global and almost continuous coverage of these very well organized wave systems emanating from the different intense storms, a geometrical optics approach is applied. The data are gathered globally and systematically, but the SAR-deriv...

The Throat of Kraken : Tidal Dissipation and Mixing Timescales in Titan’s Largest Sea

Introduction: Of Titan’s three seas, Kraken has the largest area, and sprawls over the widest range of latitude and longitude. This extent means it sees the largest variations in tidal accelerations due to Saturn’s gravity, and thus has the largest tides. New Cassini observations map the seas (figure 1) and allow quantification of tidal processes : a feature of particular interest is a narrow ‘...

Finescale Structure of the T–S Relation in the Eastern North Atlantic

Distributions of temperature (T ) and salinity (S) and their relationship in the oceans are the result of a balance between T–S variability generated at the surface by air–sea fluxes and its removal by molecular dissipation. In this paper the role of different motions in setting the cascade of T–S variance to dissipation scales is quantified using data from the North Atlantic Tracer Release Exp...
